KARACHI: Senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Farooq Sattar is in a "stable condition" and all his vital organs are functioning normally after he was injured in a car accident on Superhighway last night, an official said.

Results of a CT scan and ultrasound tests have indicated no major injuries to Sattar's vital organs however he has received some minor bruises, said Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) spokesman Anjum Rizvi.

Rizvi said a team of 12 doctors has been formed to track the MQM leader's condition, who is currently in a deep sleep. He said Sattar had complained of pain before sleeping however, according to doctors such pain is normal due to impact of the accident.

Doctors will monitor Sattar's condition for at least three days after which he is expected to be discharged, said the spokesperson.

Sattar was travelling to Karachi from Hyderabad with his driver and two police guards on Sunday night when his bulletproof pickup hit a barrier in the middle of the road near Nooriabad on Superhighway and overturned.

The two police guards suffered critical injuries and are currently under treatment. Sattar was first taken to A. O. Clinic and was later shifted to LNH.

Motorway Police SSP Karamullah Soomro told Dawn that the place of the accident was around 60 kilometres from Karachi. “We have examined the vehicle. Apparently it overturned because of a burst tyre.”
