The Saudi embassy in Bangkok has said about 36,000 Saudis visited Thailand in 2014 despite a ban in force.

Bilal Al-Ansari, in-charge of citizens' affairs at the embassy, said gangs took advantage of the scaling down of diplomatic relations to smuggle Saudis into the country.

He said the exact number of Saudis who visited the country illegally could not be determined because not all of them had been caught.
